Polls and Reviews / Redstar - Everything That Matters [Red Force]
« on: November 29, 2009, 04:36:31 am »

Release Date: 30/11/2009
Label: Red Force Recordings
Cat#: RF018
Format: MP3/WAV

1. Everything That Matters (Original Extended Mix)
2. Everything That Matters (Original Edit)
3. Everything That Matters (Red Vision Remix)
4. The Weapon (Original Mix)

Most Europeans and probably Americans themselves don't associate the US with trance. Hopefully that will change cause they do have some talents that no trance fan should miss out on. Steve 'Redstar' Bolger has most certainly made an impact on the trance scene since he released his "Awakening EP" in 2008. Since then he has delivered some strong remixes for the likes of Sean Truby, Ehren Stowers and Darren Tate. Earlier he (re-)released a two parter of the Awakening EP on his own label with remixes from some of his favourite producers but what really earned him some extra points (in my book) was his Monster Tunes release which was a real spine tingler. Just a few weeks ago he released his second single on Enhanced Recordings which was served with remixes from Deepwide and Oliver P - what more could one ask for? This young fellow is definitely on the up and up!

This new single on his own label Red Force Recordings has already been played by Above & Beyond on their radio show and as well by Sean Tyas, Signum and Sunny LAX. This is an all "Red" single with no additional remixes but knowing Steve's history this certainly shouldn't be a bad thing!

Original Mix
The first two and a half minutes shows the Redstar we know. Uptempo, rough and trancey but at the same time very melodic and it seems very well thought through. I'm not too fond of the piano which plays throughout the break, even though it isn't too dominating. The dreamy pads do however make up for it; absolutely brilliant atmosphere! When the main lead kicks in, it gets even better - and here the piano does work wonders in the background. Uplifting with endless amounts of positive energy (as cheesy as that may sound). The melody now takes another direction, surfing into an euphoric universe thematized by an aciding synth. The melody then returns. This is however only a part of the full extended version of the track and in the "Short Mix / Original Edit" you only get the main melody.

Red Vision Remix
This was the version aired on Trance Around the World with Above & Beyond. Red Vision is of course Steve himself. I'm surprised how different this is from the original. It has a few guitar touches and I like the kind of sizzling stabby synth effect that has been build around the break. It keeps the tune at a sort of boiling point.

The Weapon
Again, this tune has got the Redstar signature sound all over it somehow. I don't know how I should describe his style exactly but I can still recognize it in a second which is funny. It's a bit more "spacey" than Everything That Matters and the sub-bass isn't as pumping. The melodies are somewhat lighter albeit not as captivating as in the title track.

Verdict
I'm usually pleased with Redstar's work and this is also the case here. Great energy mixed with lush melodies is a good combination. My only point of critique would be the use of piano in the breakdown. It's being used by everyone these days. Apart from that a big thumbs up from here! I personally prefer the "Short Mix / Original Edit" and the second runner up is the Red Vision version which compliments the original mix perfectly without sounding identical in any way!

Our next release on Monster Digital is by a young up and coming producer from Poland by the name of Mateusz Stanisz aka Matt Skyer. With a huge passion for electronic music, Matt has been developing his style for a long time and now has an arsenal of tracks that have been causing a stir with the big names and are currently receiving support from the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, Markus Schulz, Alex M.O.R.P.H. Sean Tyas, Bobina and many more!

This EP is a great example of Matt's style and he has delivered two diverse tracks in Andromeda and Elixir that are both peak time hitters with highly euphoric melodies. These are two tracks to watch out for on the dancefloor this autumn!

Polls and Reviews / Anhken & Adrian - Intuition [Fraction Records]
« on: November 22, 2009, 07:46:14 am »

Anhken seems to have a contract with just about every major label in the industry at the moment. Now the time has come to a signed contract with the Signalrunners' Fraction Records. Anhken has once again joined forces with his Romanian producer buddy Adrian whom he also worked with on "That One Moment". On this release you'll find a Sunny LAX remix which has already seen major support by Above & Beyond on Trance Around The World. There's also a techier version to be found which is made by upcoming talent Liam Melly.

Original Mix
This track feels much harder than the usual 128 - 130 bpm Anhken productions. The clap has more reverb and the kick drum has a bit more, well, "kick" to it. This track still follows the style of his earlier production somewhat. The spectacular melodies and the crisp percussion elements are there. This track probably holds one of the best breakdowns I have heard in the past two months; soft pads that takes the track into a sweet atmospheric downtempo universe - nothing but sublime! The track returns in full force with a vibrant electro tinged bass, which should make this perfect for the dancefloor.

Liam Melly Remix
Liam is a producer to look out for in my opinion. I recently reviewed a single by him, which was of supreme quality. This remix is tight and should fit right in, in those more upbeat tech trance sets. The bassline has a bit of "discover records" sound to it while the the melody from the original has been re-used, but without the downtempo section.

Sunny LAX Remix
Not as driving and powerful as the Liam Melly remix but with more focus on the melodies. Very much an epic remix where the whole production just seem to fall together. Top remix from a top producer!

Verdict:
Some of the best I have heard from Fraction Records in a while. The Original Mix is the winner because of the poweful breakdown which really sucks you in, in that special way. Without a doubt one of my top singles of November and both remixes are hot as well. Outstanding!

Polls and Reviews / Vadim Soloviev - Discovery [Arisa Audio]
« on: November 22, 2009, 06:54:15 am »

The Russian producers are on fire at the moment. Vadim's brother in name Ilya "Soloviev" has had some big tunes in 2009 (Leaving Planet, Universal Universe), Anton Firtich just released a new single and Poshout is also making a name for himself at the moment. Vadim has been active in the scene for some years now but there has been some space between each release of his. Nonetheless he has been signed to some well-known labels such as AVA and Motion. He also just released a new single on the Dutch Intuition "Deep" offshoot. In mid-December he is ready with another single called "Discovery" on the Arisa Audio label. Apart from the original there is an alternative mix and a remix from Jonas Stenberg.

Original Mix
Nice and soft but with a hard kick drum and some neat percussion. The melody lifts the track with that light and floaty presence. The bass comes into play as well as a proggy acid synth which is later followed by another synth which adds to the construction of the tune. The climax of the tune is centered around delicous vocal hits, a very light and uplifting lead and some subtle piano notes.

Alternative Mix
The Alternative mix is not miles from the original. The main different lies in the techy bass, but apart from that there isn't any notable differences.

Jonas Stenberg Remix
Jonas is a young Swedish producer who stylewize has a sound not too far from the likes of Marco V, Jochen Miller and Marcel Woods. Even though he has not had a major breakthrough yet, he has already remixed for some big names, and yes, that would the three I just mentioned. As expected he knocks up the tempo and adds some more excitement and tension to the track. The big stabby tech lead in the middle goes full throttle and there you have it - a big room banger!

Verdict:
While the Alternative Mix is nice as well as the original, the two versions are not that different. 1 version would have been sufficient in my opinion. Both of these versions are delicious progressive trancers but might stand a risk of being dubbed as fillers. It doesn't stand that much out from the endless amounts of tunes getting released these days. The Jonas Stenberg remix is by far the best one in this package. Big fat sound and an overall tight mix.

Arguably the UK's most on fire trance producer at the moment, Temple One has had a storming year with stand out releases including String Theory and Tu Casa.

With some high profile remixes yet to touch down his year, notably for John O'Callaghan & Giuseppe Ottaviani, his year looks to end on a real high with yet another stand out release for the young Brit.

Sahara Nights demonstrates everything that's made Joe Garrett such hot property; clever melodies, beautiful chords and crisp production.. another sure fire winner for Temple One.

On remix duties are new Enhanced boys The Flyers & Mike Sonar who craft a brilliant electro trance rework, whilst the excellent Steve Brian turns out a quite stunning remix to round of the package in fine style!

Still only 27, Will Holland is regarded as one of the most influential young stars in trance today as the founder of one of the world’s leading trance labels Enhanced Recordings and with residencies for three of the largest clubs in the UK: Gatecrasher, Digital Society and Wildchild.

With the world’s leading dance music magazine Mixmag stating ‘the future of trance is in safe hands’ during a recent interview with Will, the young Leeds based dj/producer with an international tour diary and four international radio shows to boot continues to push the sound he loves forward. As a producer Will has seen success on many of the leading labels with his productions, regularly featuring in the sets of the world’s leading DJ’s and with his last release ‘Tears In The Rain’ topping the biggest digital charts.

On a quest to release the music he loved, Will launched Enhanced Recordings at the start of 2005. Four sub-labels and almost 100 releases later, the label that has gained “a lot of respect in a short space of time” as says the influential Netherlands-based ID-T Magazine, has made “a good case for its position at the head of the UK trance table” (Mixmag), making it ‘one of the most famous labels today’ (World No 1 Dj Armin van Buuren - ASOT). Mixmag’s praise of Will Holland hasn’t stopped there; he has a staggering three “Compilation Of The Month” awards from the magazine, along with two “Tune of the Month” accolades and received a Mixmag Future Hero status in 2007.

Famed for his ability to play ‘stand out sets at any time of the night’ (Gatecrasher), this has been reflected in his own productions and the broad spectrum of music that has been released to critical acclaim across the Enhanced labels.

Polls and Reviews / Tucandeo - Meridian EP [Infra Progressive]
« on: November 03, 2009, 11:20:24 am »

Tucandeo - a name which I haven't heard of. Apparently this Irish duo already has a few productions out on Navigation Records and add to that some plays by Paul van Dyk. As I've mentioned before it's nice to see labels picking up new talents instead of only releasing the same style of tracks by the same names. And more stuff is on the way. Coldharbour signed "Benya", also known as Yamin, has a record coming up on InfraProgressive. Things are looking good for this labels future!

Review

Meridian is the title track of this EP. Begins with a swoosh effect and a heavy bass and percussion. Some melody stabs start to "rain" and slowly takes us towards the core which consists of a driving proggy bass and some soft melodies. The whole production doesn't feel that tight but I'm loving the different effects and melodies - so addictive! This just takes us to One Summer Day which is track #2; as the title kind of suggests, this one laidback track. Very "floaty"and summerish in the same way as Sundriver productions. Tir Na Nog, a name from the old Irish mythology and the next track on this EP. Again, in the same style as the two previous ones. Nice and groovy with a very distinct electric guitar lead. Another Day is just as driving and aggressive as Meridian. Lovely piano breakdown in this one!

Verdict

I think this EP is a love and hate thing. Some might find it completely uinteresting and uinspiring. For me this is the type of EP where you can load them all into the media player, press play and lean back and enjoy them all. All 4 tracks are similar stylewize but it doesn't take away that they each have some lovely melodies. Perfect for home listening and for radio shows, but probably not something I would burn to the CD for club use. Up until now this is the best record on InfraProgressive along with DJ Eco's "Borealis", that is from a very personal perspective though.
