Polls and Reviews / Ferry Tayle & Static Blue - L'Acrobat [Enhanced]
« on: July 27, 2009, 04:10:58 am »

Few records can lay claim to be 'hotly anticipated,' this record however, can; so much so this record is probably the most sought after uplifting trance track of the year so far. Back to back plays on ASOT in both its original and Andy Blueman form, and a staggering 6 plays on TATW including the coveted Web Vote Winner spot, L'Acrobat is both powerful and beautiful and will literally rip the roof off any venue!

Weeks and weeks of forum speculation, 10's of thousands of views on Youtube and licenses to huge summer compilations from the likes of Ministry of Sound and a new remix from French maestros Karydbe and Scylla to boot, get ready for the uplifting summer anthem of 09!

Polls and Reviews / Redd Square - Digital Acoustics [Monster Tunes]
« on: July 26, 2009, 11:00:43 am »

He is back! Some might not know the name Chris Dececio or Redd Square but this old-schooler has been around for some time. His biggest record so far would be the hit single "In Your Hands" which was released on the infamous Inferno Records back in 2001. He also later had another record released through Purple Eye Entertainment and more precise on the Tatsumaki imprint run by Ferry Corsten. It has now been two years since his last appearence which was on Gareth Emery's (now closed) Five AM label. Some can probably recall the single Insignia - Kaleidoscope Eyes which Chris had produced himself and delivered additional remixes to. Great to see Monster Tunes welcoming back an old timer and this single comes with a remix from Swedish producer Christian Lejon aka Onova.

Original Mix
Chris starts out with a filtered kick, claps, hi hats and some additional percussion. An electro edged 2-note bassline also kicks in from the very beginning as well does some lush vocal bites. As the kick drum is being filtered in and soon present in its full form some extra bassline notes are being added like missing pieces in a puzzle. The tune now has good proper drive with a nice summer feel. Melodies are starting to appear in various teasing bits right before the exciting breakdown which breaks out in a big slightly delayed guitar lead with a beautiful padded background. It then switches from the more subtle and pleasent relaxing summerish to a full-on euphoric trancer when the main synths are added and the bassline kicks in again.

Onova Remix
While the prggression from the main melody has been kept, Onova has pretty much taken out everything else and replaced it. He gives it a nice driving acid touch and knocks up the pace a bit. His breakdown might now be as elegant but the pay-off approach would most likely be more effective considered the trance crowd today.

Verdict
I'm no Onova fan but I must say he pulled off a good remix this time - especially enjoing the acid lines he has put in the beginning of the track. The original is still the winner on this release. Much appreciated comeback from Redd Square and I hope we haven't seen the last of him. Big track for the summer!

Fraction Records have always been good at picking up 'out of the box' productions or at least productions that had something unique to them. I'm especially thinking of tracks like "There's Always Music", "Travelling" "Modes / Nodes" and "What's Your Name". Somos Nozes is another special track, picked up by Above & Beyond on TATW a few months ago in its demo stage. The track is written and produced by Danny Loko who some might remember from his "Drop it, Your Love", released on Discover Dark a few years ago - I was certainly interested when I heard that Danny Oliveira was Danny Loko. The release is a two-parter with an original edition and a remix edition.

Original Mix / Dub
Danny dishes up some nice and clever percussion and adds several different add-ons, effects, swooshes, etc throughout the track. As mentioned in the intro, this is the kind of track that breaks with the current 'trance' style - in fact there is not really any trance to this track. By listening to this track I'm reminded of some progressive house moments from between 10 and 5 years ago. I like how the progression in the track has been put together; just as you are about to get bored it, it accelerates and adds on some more energy. Another remarkable thing is the vocals in the track, which doesn't work as a simple hook but just wanders accross the breakdown section.

DJ Jack pres. JK5 e as Arvres Remix
DJ Jack sticks close to the original recipe but he gives it a light trance twist by adding some synths. It gives the track some more colour and diverts it from the dark moody feel it had. My favourite thing has to be the bassline which has a nice bouncey feel to it.

Fabio Stein's Electric Nuts Remix
I gotta be honest - the only record I have ever bought from Fabio Stein would be his first "Tran4 / State Of Trance" back in 2006. I hope that he will impress me this time around. As expected he adds his tech twist. Even though I'm not that much into tech trance I still kind of like this remix. He uses some really dark tech stabs and his overall production quality really shines through in an impressive way; ultra crisp hi hats, claps, big vibrating bass, quick sweeps and big synths.

Danilo Ercoles Alternative Mix / Dub
A bit more of a minimalistic percussion setup this time. This mix actually isn't that different from the original but the sound still has some different influences. To me this sounds like Coldharbour meets Somos Nozos.

Verdict
Excellent release from Fraction. I probably wouldn't play the Fabio Stein mix in a set but It is most definately recommended to the people who like it just a bit harder. Without a doubt impressed with Fabio's work. For me it is all about the original mix and the DJ Jack mix which are almost equally good - the original does top it though with it's big room, moody and simplistic progressive feel. Should you find vocal speaks annoying then the Dub should do the trick, I prefer it with vocals.

ASOT 412 support!!

Evave debuts on Enhanced Progressive with the classy 'To The Stars'. Featuring two fantastic remixes from the very hot Adymus and PROFF, this is another prog trancer you can't be without for the summer months.

As featured on Will Holland's Digitally Enhanced Volume Two, and singled out as a highlight of the first disc by Mixmag, Adymus follows up his huge last outing on Enhanced, Kaleidoscope Eyes with a truly fantastic remix. Fans of the aforementioned release will not be disappointed as he once again delivers a remix of sheer class.

Following Adymus is the hot young Russian PROFF who along with the likes of fellow countrymen such as Mango have been creating a massive stir in the prog-trance genre. PROFF turns out the remix in his own instantly recognisable style and delivers a brilliant remix that really delivers on the dance floor.

Polls and Reviews / Michael Jay Parker - Monostep [Flashover]
« on: July 19, 2009, 05:00:52 pm »

Latest release from Flashover is a single from Michael Jay Parker - a new producername in the business. He's been assisted by a bit of a trance legend on this release and that being German producer Dominik De Leon, also known for being a part of DuMonde and JamX & De Leon. No remixes on this release but a Melodic Mix and a Monotone Mix.

Melodic Mix - despite of the moderate trance tempo this tune has a good feel to it with a heavy bass and some kicking percussion. Stylewize this track reminds me of Ferry Corsten's Radio Crash from 2008 - in other words we are dealing with 'bomb' with some slight hints of tech but still with big room trance feel underlined by the main lead.

Monotone Mix - this mix is almost the exact same as the melodic mix, though more than 30 seconds longer despite the fact that various elements has been withdrawn from the track; cause in the melodic mix, you get the full trance pay-off with the heavy supersaw - a pay-off you as a listener would expect due to the build-up and energy throughout the track. It therefore feels a bit anti-climatic and awkvard that the track doesn't peak in the same way as the melodic mix. But as mentioned, this track holds some good energy and if you're not into or tired of supersaws, then this mix might suit you better.

Verdict - always nice with some new names on big reliable labels like Flashover, so that you aren't introduced to the same sounds and basic ideas each time. The Melodic mix caught my attention at first listen and I found myself listening to it for an hour on repeat before I switched to the next mix. A bit dissapointed by the Monotone mix at first but after a few listens I started to get into it. Nice club banger from Flashover!

Polls and Reviews / Temple One - String Theory [Enhanced] - Out Now
« on: July 13, 2009, 03:47:26 pm »

Armin van Buuren = “One of my favourite tunes at the moment” (ASOT 410)
Above & Beyond = TATW Support
Ferry Corsten = Corsten’s Countdown Support

Heralded by Armin van Buuren as 'one of my favourite producers today,' Joe is one of the hottest UK artists in 2009. With consistent support from every major DJ worth their salt, and featuring on every major radio show, compilation and set list going, he has a knack of producing the kind of music capable of giving goose bumps to the deceased.

Following his quite simply massive Aurora EP last year, Joe serves up another slice of peak time perfection. Already supported by Armin van Buuren on several  ASOT’s, Above & Beyond on TATW and Ferry Corsten on Corsten’s Countdown, , this is sure to be another sure fire hit for Temple One.

With a film score esq break with haunting synths and pads, this is once again a big-room anthem, with a darker theme than Joe's previous productions.

Enhanced welcomes Mark Sixma for the first time to the label, and he turns out a stunning remix under his M6 guise. Adding techy elements to the original's strong lead, Mark really takes the track in a different direction, for the darker dancefloors.

1. Frozen (Original Mix)
2. Despero (Original Mix)

Enhanced welcomes newcomers to the label, The Flyers & Mike Sonar with this fantastic double header, already reviewed by leading website trance.nu as 4/5!

Fans of Adymus' Kaleidoscope Eyes will no doubt find favour with this classy outing of bassline driven, slick melodic trance.

Lead track Frozen is a wonderfully powerful production that will rock any dancefloor. On the flip, Despero features a more electro-trance bassline but still encompasses the guy's fantastic smooth melodies.

A really solid debut!

Polls and Reviews / Jorn van Deynhoven - Fastlane [Infrasonic]
« on: July 05, 2009, 07:31:32 pm »

Here is a fresh release from the Infrasonic stable. The track comes from a producer who is mainly famed for his countless remixes for acts such as Majai, Roger Shah, Stan Void, Haris C, Mike Shiver and CJ Stone. He is a Dutch DJ and producer and hails from the city of Amsterdam. Infrasonic presents Jorn van Deynhoven. The remixes comes from Robert Nickson (NL), Rozza (UK) and Haris C (CY). Jorn's track has already seen support from Armin van Buuren and Above & Beyond, so there is no reason to doubt that this will be a big one.

1. Fastlane (Original Mix) (7:29)
2. Fastlane (Robert Nickson Remix) (7:19)
3. Fastlane (Rozza Remix) (7:55)
4. Fastlane (Rozza Slow Motion Remix) (8:36)
5. Fastlane (Haris C Remix) (6:39)

Review

Original Mix
Jorn did a brilliant job giving Stan Void's "Transience" a proper club rework last year. I am eager to hear this original and so hopefully he won't dissapoint me. Fastlane is tight club trancer with a heavy bass, sizzling synth lines, and a delicious build-up. It's not the most interesting track I have heard this year but I think it would really work wonders to hear it on a proper sound system.

Robert Nickson Remix
A little more energetic and pumping than the original and the kick is slamming! I think Nickson actually succeeds pushing the lead more forward than Jorn did. Actually, I think that those two versions combined would make the perfect version of this track. Still, great energy and lovely breakdown created by Robert Nickson!

Rozza Remix / Slow Motion Remix
Rozza delivers two mixes this time. He has done some huge, and in my opinion his best, remixes for Infrasonic in the past. Some might remember his remix of "The Path" and "Imagine". It does not take long for me to realize that this one is right up my alley - as per usual Rozza covers the original ideas with his sticky, warm and magnificent melodies. I have always felt that Rozza needed some more space in his productions but still, the outstanding melodies makes up for that in the end. The slower has (duhh) been slowed down a bit and has a few delicious touches which differentiates it from the other Rozza mix. The lovely female vocal lays a perfect finish on the track and again, as in the other mix you can expect great melodies.

Haris C Remix
Big room trancer from Haris here. Liking his use of hi hats and glitches. These contributes to make the production a little interesting for the listener and sort of gives it a unique touch. Pay attention to the crystal clear pads and the tight and pumping bass. Haris also succeeds in bringing out some fantastic melodies in this track. Worth a listen for sure.

Verdict
I feel a little biased praising the Rozza mix given the fact that I like his style so much. But, I have been listening to the different mixes over and over and my conclusion still stands clear - the Rozza mix is the winner. It has so much more feeling and depth compared to the other versions. I was dissapointed with the Nickson mix to be honest and only thing I could really appreciate was the main lead in his version. Original, Haris C and Rozza Remix are strongly recommended if you dig uplifting trance!
